Learning how to grow wheatgrass is simple, once you get the basics down and try it once, you will never forget how to grow wheatgrass! You can click here to buy all your wheatgrass supplies before you start.

First, soak your organic wheat berries for 12 hours straight or overnight. Use one cup of organic wheat grass berries per tray. Cover the wheat berries with a towel or put them in a dark place. In hot weather the wheat grass berries can start to ferment. If they ferment, the water will get bubbly, foamy and maybe even smell. If this happens, throw out the wheat berries and start over again. You can try to plant the wheat berries, but they may not sprout.

Next you will plant the wheat berries. Prepare the trays by spreading the soil mixture about 1-2 inches deep. Water your soil well with a mister and spread the soaked wheat berries in a single layer. The organic wheat berries can touch but should not be on top of each other. Cover the berries with a thin layer of soil as thin as you can make it. Then cover the tray with another tray. Place your tray in a dark cool place away from the sun.

For the next 3-5 days, uncover the trays daily for fresh air. Check for mold, wipe it off if you find it and spray the affected area with a bit of vinegar. Check to make sure that the soil is still moist and moisten the soil with the mister if it seems dry. Cover and put the tray back in the cool dark place. You should be seeing roots and sprouts during this time frame. After 5 days, if there are no sprouts and/or lots of mold, you will have to throw out the batch. There could be a few reasons why your batch went bad. Common reasons include, you bought bad seeds that weren’t for sprouting or weren’t organic, or you soaked your seeds for too long, or there was too much heat for germination.

When the sprouts are about an inch tall, uncover them and mist them with a diluted liquid seaweed supplement. This supplement step is optional but worth it if you have the seaweed available. We recommended organic kelp. Continue to keep the trays uncovered, in indirect sunlight until the blades of wheatgrass have grown to 8-10” tall. This may take another week and then they will be ready to juice! You will need to water them on a daily basis. Use a sprinkler watering can for the main watering and mister later if they start wilting.

Tip: The organic kelp should be used only in the first days, otherwise the juice may start tasting like seaweed! If the grass begins to lean in one direction, most likely towards the sun, turn the tray.

Growing wheatgrass hydroponically or without soil, is one of the cheapest and easiest ways of growing wheatgrass. This is because wheatgrass is considered a sprout. You can sprout wheatgrass very much the same way you would sprout alfalfa with a few more considerations.

All you need for learn how to grow wheatgrass are organic wheatgrass seeds (they may be labeled wheat berries – check the label to make sure they are for wheatgrass growing), and two plastic stackable trays that you can pick up from any garden center, one with holes and one without.

When choosing tray for wheatgrass growing, choose the tray based on your location and volume needs. Many garden centers give away the black plastic trays that smaller plants come in, so ask around.

To start the growing wheatgrass process soak two cups wheat berries overnight (a minimum of 12 hours). The next day you should see some of the berries starting to sprout, rinse well in cold water 2-3 times for the next 2-3 days and transfer them to the tray with the holes in it. They tray without holes will be stacked underneath the tray with holes.

At this point, the root system should be long enough to prevent them from falling out of the tray. Continue to rinse the wheatgrass seeds under cold water for the next 10 days or so and make sure that the trays are receiving sunlight to absorb chlorophyll. It takes wheatgrass an average of 12 days to grow before they are ready for juicing.

Make sure that when you are juicing that you are trimming the wheatgrass and not juicing the roots as well. If there is a mold problem it would be in the root system, so by trimming, you avoid this problem.

Now that you know how to grow wheatgrass give it a try, it’s a lot easier than you think!
